Youth soccer coaching and drills

Not really a question of whichis better, but I fancy the 3-5-2 and have taken over an Under 16 boys team halfway through the season who play 4-3-3. They score but also concede too many. Anyone have any helpful insights to help me understand the dynamics of the 4-3-3 and how to get the best out of it?

Hi Kas!

Thanks for your reply. The problem is that we are outnumbered in midfield all the time, and the only way to compensate that I can see is by getting other players to occupy the midfield, but that means taking them out of position

To me 4-4-2 is the most adaptable formation being you can move midfielders to attacking or defensive or both, but as a coach I feel you always have to make a formation that suits your team. So if you have a team with loads of midfielders 3-5-2 would work. Do you play the 2 outside midfielders as wings or just clog the middle with them? And what are the formations most common that you play against?
